Nuisance Bear

Nuisance Bear

Documentary • USA • 2026 • 90 Minutes
Synopsis: Fresh off winning the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary Feature at the Sundance Film Festival, Nuisance Bear offers a striking look at survival in a rapidly changing Arctic.

A polar bear is forced to navigate a human-dominated world of tourists, wildlife officers, and hunters as its ancient migration routes collide with modern life. When a sacred predator is labeled a nuisance, the question of who truly belongs in this shared landscape comes sharply into focus.

Filmmakers Gabriela Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman return to Churchill, Manitoba—known as the “Polar Bear Capital of the World”— to expand upon their award-winning short. Guided by an Inuit narrator whose perspective resists simplification, the film presents a layered portrait of uneasy coexistence.

As the bears are monitored, photographed, and redirected, moments of tension and quiet defiance emerge, revealing both their resilience and the fragility of the systems meant to control them.

Rejecting the conventions of traditional nature documentaries, Nuisance Bear challenges viewers to reconsider wildlife as spectacle—and to confront our own place within the natural world.
